Maintaining Compounding Workflows?
Step-by-step guide for configuring and maintaining Compounding Workflows in SiCompounding.
Overview
Compounding Workflows are structured, technology-driven processes that guide the preparation of customized medications. SiCompounding uses workflows to manage formula creation, pharmacist verification, ingredient checks, and other QA steps. Correct workflow configuration ensures safety, traceability, and regulatory compliance.

Compounding Workflow Types
Compounding workflows are exposed as buttons/options in the Workflows window. Common types include:
- Non Sterile — Preparing non-injectable products such as creams, liquids, and capsules.
- Non Sterile to Sterile — Converting a non-sterile process into a sterile product using one or more non-sterile ingredients (e.g., APIs).
- Non Sterile to Sterile (Quarantine) — Workflow that enforces sterilization and a 14-day quarantine period for testing.
- Sterile to Sterile — Manipulating commercially prepared sterile products (e.g., adding an antibiotic to an IV bag).
- Sterile to Sterile (Quarantine) — Aseptic processing workflow for Category 2 preparations intended for extended storage; includes quarantine steps and testing.
Workflow Steps & Authorized Profiles
Each compounding workflow displays the sequence of steps and which Authorized Profiles may perform them. For example, select Sterile to Sterile (Quarantine) to view two columns:
- Step — The operation performed (weighing, compounding, sterilization, testing, release).
- Authorized Profiles — Roles authorized to complete the step (e.g., Technician, Pharmacist, QA Analyst).
At the end of each step, click the Status icon to manage the step record.
Managing Workflow Steps
- Edit — Click Edit from the Status options to open the Workflow Information window and change step details. Click Save to apply changes.
- Change Logs — Select Change Logs to open the Record Modification Log, which lists all edits to the workflow, including user, timestamp, and changes. Click X to close.
Searching and Filtering
- Use any provided filters or the workflow dropdown to switch between workflow types.
- Search fields (if available) allow quick lookup of specific steps or authorized profiles.

Best Practices
- Define roles and authorized profiles clearly and limit access according to responsibilities.
- Use quarantine workflows for products requiring sterility testing and extended storage.
- Keep detailed change logs for every workflow modification for audit readiness.
- Validate workflow steps with users (pharmacists and technicians) to confirm practicality and compliance.
- Regularly review and test workflows to ensure they reflect current SOPs and regulatory requirements.
