Set Up Zebra ZDesigner ZD421-203dpi (ZPL)?

Step-by-step guide for configuring the Zebra ZD421-203dpi label printer using ZPL on Windows

Overview

This guide explains how to configure the Zebra ZDesigner ZD421-203dpi (ZPL) printer after installation.
These settings ensure proper label alignment, print quality, and reliable output for direct thermal labels.


Open Printer Preferences

  1. Complete the Zebra printer installation.
  2. Open Devices and Printers on your computer.
  3. Locate ZDesigner ZD421-203dpi ZPL.
  4. Right-click the printer and select Printer Properties.
  5. From the Properties dialog, click Preferences.

Navigate to the Print Options tab and configure the following settings.

  • Speed: 4.0 in/s
  • Darkness: 15
  • Printing Mode: Direct Thermal

Offsets

  • Top: 0"
  • Left: 0"

Advanced Settings

  • Backfeed: Default
  • Pause: No Pause
  • Control Characters: Standard
  • RTC Refresh: Start print time

Graphic Options Tab

Navigate to the Graphic Options tab.

Dithering

  • Verify the positioning between Photo and Clipart options (default alignment).

Printer Graphic Options

  • Image Transfer Mode: Direct Print
  • Graphic Type: ZIP

Operation Mode Tab

Navigate to the Operation Mode tab and apply the following settings.

Operation Mode

  • Mode: Tear Off
  • Offset: 0"

Cutter

  • Type: Off
  • Cut Every: N/A

Final Check

After applying these settings:

  • Click Apply
  • Click OK
  • Print a test label to confirm alignment and print quality

Your Zebra ZD421-203dpi (ZPL) printer should now be properly configured.


Notes

  • These settings are optimized for direct thermal labels
  • If labels feed incorrectly, recalibrate the printer using the Zebra calibration process
  • Darkness and speed may be adjusted slightly depending on label material
